Publication An evaluation of the lineage of Brucella isolates in turkey by a whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism analysis(2024) Akar, Kadir; Holzer, Katharina; Hoelzle, Ludwig E.; Yıldız Öz, Gülseren; Abdelmegid, Shaimaa; Baklan, Emin Ayhan; Eroğlu, Buket; Atıl, Eray; Moustafa, Shawky A.; Wareth, Gamal; Elkhayat, Manar; Pedersen, KarlBrucellosis is a disease caused by the Brucella ( B. ) species. It is a zoonotic disease that affects farm animals and causes economic losses in many countries worldwide. Brucella has the ability to persist in the environment and infect the host at low doses. Thus, it is more important to trace brucellosis outbreaks, identify their sources of infection, and interrupt their transmission. Some countries already have initial data, but most of these data are based on a Multiple-Locus Variable-Number Tandem-Repeat Analysis (MLVA), which is completely unsuitable for studying the Brucella genome. Since brucellosis is an endemic disease in Turkey, this study aimed to examine the genome of Turkish Brucella isolates collected between 2018 and 2020, except for one isolate, which was from 2012. A total of 28 strains of B. melitensis ( n = 15) and B. abortus ( n = 13) were analyzed using a core-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism (cgSNP) analysis. A potential connection between the Turkish isolates and entries from Sweden, Israel, Syria, Austria, and India for B. melitensis was detected. For B. abortus , there may be potential associations with entries from China. This explains the tight ties found between Brucella strains from neighboring countries and isolates from Turkey. Therefore, it is recommended that strict measures be taken and the possible effects of uncontrolled animal introduction are emphasized.Publication Can market fragmentation explain the limited success of political attempts to promote grain legume cultivation in Germany?(2025) Mittag, Franziska; Hess, SebastianGrain legumes, such as field peas, field beans, sweet lupins and soybeans, are known to increase biodiversity within the appropriate crop rotation and are an important source of import-substituting feed protein. National and regional policy schemes have long tried to support the cultivation of grain legumes. Although many regions in Germany offer favourable conditions for grain legumes, previous subsidy schemes have failed to increase the area under cultivation and farmers report a lack of market incentives. Indeed, the available price data exhibit a substantial share of non-random missing values in weeks when grain legumes were not traded. We analyse these non-price periods using cointegration tests and single-hurdle Tobit models. The results indicate that regional price formation for grain legumes in German regions depends not only on a minimum quantity of the respective legume crop in supply but also on a favourable supra-regional soybean price: Regional grain legume markets are not integrated and show evidence of a fragmented market structure. This may explain why local grain legume value chains have failed to emerge in Germany, despite decades of policy attempts to support these crops.Publication Design and development of an accessible open-source augmented reality learning authoring tool for applications in agroecological settings(2024) Shidende, Deogratias; Treydte, AnnaAugmented Reality (AR) has emerged as a transformative educational technology, offering immersive, multisensory learning experiences that enhance engagement, conceptual understanding, and contextualization. In agroecology, where students must grasp complex ecological interactions and context-dependent knowledge, AR can bridge the gap between classroom instruction and field-based learning. However, the creation of AR content remains largely inaccessible to many educators in higher learning institutions (HLIs), particularly those without programming skills and individuals with disabilities such as the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH), and the blind and low vision (BLV). This dissertation addresses the central question: How can an accessible AR learning authoring tool enable non-technical educators and users with disabilities to create AR learning experiences for agroecology education in HLIs? To address this question, the study employed a design-based research (DBR) methodology, integrating Agile Scrum for iterative, inclusive tool development. Seven research questions (RQ1–RQ7) guided the investigation. First, a document-based analysis (RQ1) compared open-source software licenses (OSLs) to determine their suitability for academic–industry collaboration. Permissive licenses (e.g., MIT, BSD) were found to offer more flexibility in code reuse and integration, thereby promoting long-term project sustainability, although they require supplementary legal mechanisms to ensure reciprocity. Next, functional and non-functional software requirements (RQ2) were elicited through stakeholder workshops, interviews, surveys, and accessibility evaluations. These requirements informed the selection and redesign of MirageXR, an open-source AR platform. Key accessibility features were specified for DHH users, such as customizable captioning of audio augmentations, and for BLV users, such as voice navigation and spatial audio cues. These enhancements underscored the dual instructional and assistive roles of AR tools. In response to RQ3, a modular, component-based software architecture was designed using the C4 model. This enabled seamless integration of external services (e.g., 3D object repositories, learning management systems, and automatic speech recognition) and ensured that features could be added or updated without disrupting system stability. This modularity was essential given the evolving nature of AR technologies. The design and implementation phases (RQ4 & RQ5) employed participatory iterative prototyping with user feedback throughout the development process. Accessibility features were integrated into image, audio, and video augmentations, with functionalities such as caption editing, playback speed control, and 3D spatial positioning. These solutions directly addressed gaps in existing AR authoring tools, particularly for DHH and BLV users. The sixth research question (RQ6) investigated usability and applicability through an AR creation workshop involving 24 agroecology educators. Findings revealed that although participants initially encountered difficulties, they gained proficiency over time. UMUX scores showed a correlation between AR experience and perceived usefulness. Participants highlighted AR's potential to visualize complex concepts and engage students in experiential learning. However, limitations in 3D content availability and customization highlighted the need for integrated 3D content creation and editing tools specifically tailored to agroecology. To answer RQ7, the study conducted a systematic literature review of 60 studies to identify current accessibility evaluation methods in AR. Most evaluations employed task-based scenarios, utilizing metrics such as time on task, error rate, and user satisfaction. The study's own evaluation validated that DHH users could independently author AR content using the developed tool. In contrast, BLV users could navigate the authoring functionalities but were unable to fully author AR content, indicating that further design improvements and assistive functionalities are required for full inclusion. Methodologically, this study contributes a novel integration of DBR and Agile Scrum for inclusive educational technology design. This hybrid framework facilitated rapid prototyping, iterative refinement, and participatory co-design, and is recommended for broader application in accessibility-focused educational innovation. Future research should document and validate this methodological approach across additional contexts and user groups. The study makes the following contributions: (1) provision of an open-source, extensible AR authoring interfaces and codebase for public use; (2) improved AR accessibility for AR for DHH and BLV users; (3) development of modular architectural and algorithmic solutions to enable multimodal accessibility; (4) empirical validation of AR’s pedagogical value in agroecology education; and (5) identification of optimal open-source licensing models for collaborative educational software development. In sum, the findings demonstrate that an accessible, open-source AR authoring tool can empower diverse educators, including those with disabilities, to create inclusive and contextually relevant learning experiences. The research affirms the importance of universal design, participatory development, and modularity in educational technology design and concludes with strategic recommendations: integrating AI-assisted 3D content generation, expanding accessibility to additional user groups, and establishing communities of practice to support sustainable AR content development in agroecology.Publication Order from entropy: big data from FAIR data cohorts in the digital age of plant breeding(2025) Gogna, Abhishek; Arend, Daniel; Beier, Sebastian; Rezaei, Ehsan Eyshi; Würschum, Tobias; Zhao, Yusheng; Chu, Jianting; Reif, Jochen C.Lack of interoperable datasets in plant breeding research creates an innovation bottleneck, requiring additional effort to integrate diverse datasets—if access is possible at all. Handling of plant breeding data and metadata must, therefore, change toward adopting practices that promote openness, collaboration, standardization, ethical data sharing, sustainability, and transparency of provenance and methodology. FAIR Digital Objects, which build on research data infrastructures and FAIR principles, offer a path to address this interoperability crisis, yet their adoption remains in its infancy. In the present work, we identify data sharing practices in the plant breeding domain as Data Cohorts and establish their connection to FAIR Digital Objects. We further link these cohorts to broader research infrastructures and propose a Data Trustee model for federated data sharing. With this we aim to push the boundaries of data management, often viewed as the last step in plant breeding research, to an ongoing process to enable future innovations in the field.Publication Reaping what we sow: centering values in food systems transformations research(2025) Care, O.; Zaehringer, Julie G.; Bernstein, Michael J.; Chapman, Mollie; Friis, Cecilie; Graham, Sonia; Haider, L. Jamila; Hernández-Morcillo, Mónica; Hoffmann, Harry; Kernecker, Maria Lee; Pitt, Hannah; Seufert, VerenaIn many transdisciplinary research settings, a lack of attention to the values underpinning project aims can inhibit stakeholder engagement and ultimately slow or undermine project outcomes. As a research collective (The Careoperative), we have developed a set of four shared values through a facilitated visioning process, as central to the way we work together: care, reflexivity, inclusivity, and collectivity. In this paper, we explore the implications of a values-centered approach to collaboration in food system transformation research. The paper presents two cases that illustrate how researchers might approach centering values in practice. Where much research on food system transformation focuses on values of food system stakeholders, we contribute insights into the values of researchers in such transdisciplinary endeavors. Specifically, we argue that researchers working on sustainability transformations need to be better prepared to engage in such reflections and aspire to embody values aligned with the transformations they seek to research.Publication Same data, different analysts: variation in effect sizes due to analytical decisions in ecology and evolutionary biology(2025) Gould, Elliot; Berauer, Bernd J.; Ernst, Ulrich Rainer; Zitomer, Rachel A.Although variation in effect sizes and predicted values among studies of similar phenomena is inevitable, such variation far exceeds what might be produced by sampling error alone. One possible explanation for variation among results is differences among researchers in the decisions they make regarding statistical analyses. A growing array of studies has explored this analytical variability in different fields and has found substantial variability among results despite analysts having the same data and research question. Many of these studies have been in the social sciences, but one small “many analyst” study found similar variability in ecology. We expanded the scope of this prior work by implementing a large-scale empirical exploration of the variation in effect sizes and model predictions generated by the analytical decisions of different researchers in ecology and evolutionary biology. We used two unpublished datasets, one from evolutionary ecology (blue tit, Cyanistes caeruleus , to compare sibling number and nestling growth) and one from conservation ecology ( Eucalyptus , to compare grass cover and tree seedling recruitment). The project leaders recruited 174 analyst teams, comprising 246 analysts, to investigate the answers to prespecified research questions. Analyses conducted by these teams yielded 141 usable effects (compatible with our meta-analyses and with all necessary information provided) for the blue tit dataset, and 85 usable effects for the Eucalyptus dataset. We found substantial heterogeneity among results for both datasets, although the patterns of variation differed between them. For the blue tit analyses, the average effect was convincingly negative, with less growth for nestlings living with more siblings, but there was near continuous variation in effect size from large negative effects to effects near zero, and even effects crossing the traditional threshold of statistical significance in the opposite direction. In contrast, the average relationship between grass cover and Eucalyptus seedling number was only slightly negative and not convincingly different from zero, and most effects ranged from weakly negative to weakly positive, with about a third of effects crossing the traditional threshold of significance in one direction or the other. However, there were also several striking outliers in the Eucalyptus dataset, with effects far from zero. For both datasets, we found substantial variation in the variable selection and random effects structures among analyses, as well as in the ratings of the analytical methods by peer reviewers, but we found no strong relationship between any of these and deviation from the meta-analytic mean. In other words, analyses with results that were far from the mean were no more or less likely to have dissimilar variable sets, use random effects in their models, or receive poor peer reviews than those analyses that found results that were close to the mean. The existence of substantial variability among analysis outcomes raises important questions about how ecologists and evolutionary biologists should interpret published results, and how they should conduct analyses in the future.Publication Sustainable food consumption and Sustainable Development Goal 12: conceptual challenges for monitoring and implementation(2024) Mensah, Kristina; Wieck, Christine; Rudloff, BettinaIn recent years, policy initiatives have been developed to promote sustainability. Although sustainable food production is an integral part of many national agricultural policies, this is not the case for sustainable food consumption. This article systematically reviews key elements of sustainable food consumption and evaluates how they align with existing policy indicators, specifically SDG 12, within the context of the agricultural policy of the European Union. Through a cross-referencing approach, this article identifies gaps and possible improvements in policy indicator frameworks to better capture elements of sustainable food consumption. We find that SDG 12 targets are not suitable to assess progress to sustainable food consumption. While targets are closely linked to environmental and economic issues, they are insufficient to monitor sustainable food consumption. Our findings suggest the necessity for enhanced or modified policy indicators that encompass the key elements of sustainable food consumption as well as a comprehensive definition of the latter to effectively design and evaluate polices on this matter.Publication Understanding small‐scale private forest owners is a basis for transformative change towards integrative conservation(2024) Tiebel, Malin; Mölder, Andreas; Bieling, Claudia; Hansen, Peter; Plieninger, Tobias1. Balancing societal demands on forests is a major challenge in current forest management. Small-scale private forest owners are an important ownership group that is rarely addressed directly in this discussion. Our study aims to identify and differentiate between private forest owner groups. Based on this, we take a systemic approach and determine leverage points that can be used to foster transformative change towards integrative conservation-oriented forest management. 2. We conducted a survey of 1656 small-scale private forest owners in northwest Germany within a typical European multi-ownership landscape and formed three clusters based on their activities. 3. While all groups generally perceived nature conservation as important, they differed with regard to their forest management activities. Multiple-use-oriented forest owners (45%) were most active, including in terms of conservation measures. Conservation-oriented owners (25%) mainly focused on passive measures, and conventional owners (30%) showed only a little engagement with conservation-related activities. Despite the differences, common instruments promoting conservation activities were identified. They included, for example on-site consultation, information about legal regulations and financial incentives. 4. Based on four system characteristics (parameters, feedback, design and intent), we identified leverage points towards transformative change. The deep and thus effective leverage points are changing the discourse, accounting for the heterogeneity of private forest owners as well as for uncertainty related to climate change and adapting measures to local contexts. Furthermore, working towards increasing awareness, knowledge and interest as well as accounting for the desire for autonomy and control are promising pathways for change. 5. A holistic transformation of forest policy and management towards integrative conservation is urgently needed to meet the current challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and timber demand. This transformation has to go beyond the adaptation of existing policy instruments and instead focus on systematic and cross-sectoral changes in the underlying policy orientation, its design and its implementation.
